This page outlines the Key Elements of the programme. Full details are in the Programme Handbook Your Area Leader Your Area Leader (AL) oversees and helps provide mentoring in your area of the country. If you are following the programme via the individual route, your Area Leader will assign you to your mentor and oversee your involvement. You will be able to contact them with any questions you have if your mentor can''t help. If you are on a Local Authority route and work for the music service, you will be allocated a mentor from within that team. To find out who your Area Leader is click here. Your Mentor You will be assigned to a mentor by your Area Leader soon after starting the programme. If you are on the LA Route the mentor will be someone from your Local Authority. The role of your mentor will be as a critical friend. They are not there to judge, to inspect or to instruct, they are there to support, to suggest and to discuss. Your mentor will have received training and guidance to support them in their mentoring work. They might be much more experienced than you, but equally they may not be. Your mentor is someone you can discuss ideas, thoughts and concerns with. The first thing that you will do with your mentor is to agree your professional development needs. We recommend that you complete the programme Needs Analysis Audit which is carefully designed to help you examine your prior experience and your development needs. With your mentor you will produce an individualised route through the programme which will be carefully tailored to support your professional development. For more details of this process click on Identifying your professional needs. Your mentor will visit you in the classroom at least once and will discuss the session with you immediately afterwards. This will help you identify further professional development needs. Your mentor will also be available to provide support as you work through the modules. The Modules There are fourteen modules and you will study those that meet your individual needs. Each modules has three elements: Study Guide: these contain the main written content of the module Resources: these are additional online resources that will support your learning Workshop: these are practical events led by experienced workshop leaders All the modules contain Study Guides and Resources, and eight of them also contain a workshop. The modules are designed to be practical and thought provoking. Throughout both the written and the practical activity there will be suggestions for activates to try out in the classroom. Each module also has two Key Tasks which will support your whole class teaching activity. Two of the modules are compulsory and you must include evidence of engagement of these in your portfolio. They are What is Musical Learning? and Developing Vocal Work. In addition you should choose a minimum of three more which are selected to meet your individual needs and agreed with your mentor. There is no maximum so you could do all the modules. The minimum number is 5 modules. Click here to go to the modules area. Online Resources Discussion with others is key to the programme and the online forum provides a supportive framework for this debate. The forum on the programme to date has been a lively place with plenty of people joining in. In addition to this general discussion we provide occasional seminars where eminent music educationalists put forward some personal views and invite comment from others - these seminars have produced some of the most thought provoking discussion and ideas and can be read here. Completing the programme As you progress through the modules you will be completing Key Tasks which you will add to your online portfolio. You will also put into your portfolio your Needs Analysis, your Professional Development Plan, records of school visits and anything else which you feel demonstrates your engagement with the programme. When you have completed your modules you submit your portfolio to Trinity Guildhall/The Open University for certification. For more details click here.
