Module Summary ‘Teaching performing’ can be understood as a relatively straightforward business, the aim of which is to give children sufficient ‘technical control’ of their instruments in order to be able to perform music composed by others. In this unit we challenge such conventional and narrow interpretations and ask practitioners to explore perhaps less familiar but much richer musical contexts within which to develop children’s performing skills. This module is particularly appropriate if the main focus of your work is involved with developing children’s performing skills as an instrumental/vocal teacher or workshop leader. This module addresses the following questions: Do I understand how the development of performing skills in whole class instrumental/vocal contexts differs from other models of music teaching e.g. class music; individual/small group instrumental teaching; workshop-leading? Am I aware of the particular teaching challenges of whole class instrumental and vocal work and ways in which these might be addressed? Do I know how composing and improvising can support the development of performing activities? Am I able to create opportunities for pupils to perform through responding to aural stimuli? To demonstrate engagement with this module the minimum you should record in your portfolio your response to the two key tasks (guide: 400 words each). The activities within the module are there to support your learning and you are encouraged to draw upon them in responding to the Key Tasks. However they are not compulsory. Study Guide (Click here to download the PDF - you must be logged in)This module comprises a Study Guide and a workshop. The two elements are linked through two ‘Key Tasks’. First, work through the Study Guide up to and including Key Task 1. You should take your response to this task to the workshop where it will form the basis of one of the workshop activities. Following the workshop, work through the remainder of the Study Guide and complete Key Task 2.If you have not read the Programme Handbook you should do so now. Homecoming Backing TrackAfter you have completed this module (attended the workshop, completed both Key Tasks and submitted your online evaluation) you will be able to download the backing track for Homecoming - the song used in the workshop. To do so click here. Click here to download the lyrics for the song used in Activity 2 Task 2 of the workshop.
