Module Summary
Listening, appraising and responding are central to all musical activity yet their development is often sidelined into ‘listening lessons’ or ‘aural tests’. In this module we look at the ways in which listening, appraising and responding can be integrated into composing, improvising and performing and the many ways children can demonstrate the quality of their responses to music. This module addresses the following questions:
  • Do I have strategies for integrating ‘listening’ ‘appraising’ and ‘responding’ into composing and performing activities?
  • Am I able to adopt a range of approaches to supporting pupils’ development as listeners and appraisers?
  • Do I understand the many ways in which children can demonstrate their responses to music and the implications of these for music teaching and learning?
