Working with Local Authorities and Music Services
We are introducing a “Local Authority Route” which will allow LAs to offer the programme to their practitioners in a way which best supports their own and their practitioners needs and priorities. The LA route might be organised by the LA itself or by the music service, depending on local circumstances. Where an LA does not opt for this route, teachers will still be able to access the programme on and individual basis, but this option will be gradually phased out.
What the LA Route offers
The LA Route aims to give the LA ownership of the programme through:
Consultation with the KS2 programme team before the start of the programme to identify LA and practitioners needs and priorities
Face to face workshops provided during normal INSET days
Professional development programme for the LA or music service’s own mentoring teams to enable them to effectively mentor practitioners in their authority.
Providing more general advocacy, advice and support for LA practitioners.
Providing the LA with a monitoring and reporting mechanism to review practitioners'' progress and analyse levels of engagement with the programme.
Local Authority Commitment
We are keen to work with LA’s to ensure that the programme best reflects the needs of their practitioners. In order to be able to take on the LA Route the LA would need to be able to commit to the following basic requirements:
Offer at least 4 INSET days over the course of five terms to the programme.
Encourage classroom teachers and community musicians working in the LA to participate in the programme
Develop a mechanism for identifying practitioner’s needs or make use of the ks2 programme’s needs analysis process;
Have a suitable team of people committed to the principles of the programme to act as mentors for LA practitioners.
Offer some administrative support. You will need someone to coordinate the programme for the LA who will get an admin log-in for this site so that they can set up workshops and manage bookings. (If you are an LA coordinator looking for information on your role please log-in and click here)
Next steps
Local Authorities or music services interested in following the LA Route through the programme should contact the national team. We will arrange a visit to talk through the process and to ensure that the operation of the programme fits well with local circumstances. We are also very happy to run a session for all staff to discuss the nature, principles and structure of the programme– we have found that winning hearts and minds at the start of the programme is a key factor in its success.
